The Fish Market, Fresh Fish in Patagonia
From War Veteran to Fish Market
Throughout the Stories of Patagonia series, we have highlighted many people who have relocated to Villa la Angostura after falling in love with the town and its surroundings. The town has become a magnet for people seeking a close-knit community bound together by the beauty of nature. As important as these people are to the fabric of the society, the people that grew up here form the backbone of the town and their lives and businesses have helped create the place that we know and love.
Gino of El Rey Tiburón is just one of those people. He was born in Villa la Angostura nearly 60 years ago. His family has deep roots in the town starting when his grandparents decided to move here. Growing up in the town was a wonderful experience. Everyone knew each other and there was a sense of calm. Although Villa la Angostura has changed in many ways since then, he is extremely proud to be from Villa la Angostura and like so many of the people that live here, he views his hometown as a paradise.

Gino started El Rey Tiburón fish market with his wife in 2009. Despite not knowing much about fish, this dynamic duo have built up a thriving business serving tourists and locals and have a loyal customer base. In the beginning, they decided that they were going to be a husband-and-wife team without any other staff since they knew their product better than anyone and wanted to ensure the high-quality and integrity that they value.
Gino and his wife pride themselves on providing top-notch customer service which includes having conversations and exchanging suggestions to make sure that their customers leave happy. When someone asks them what to eat in Patagonia, they are happy to offer suggestions. The hygiene of the place is impeccable and when you walk in, you are treated like a long-long friend that they have known all their lives. Despite starting small, El Ray Tiburon now offers a wide variety of fish including salmon, trout fillets, butterfly trout, and hake. Their best sellers include hake and salmon, which Patagonia is known for. They also sell different types of seafood including sea fish from the Atlantic and Pacific.
During his free time, Gino likes to go for walks to clear his mind or go on a weekend vacation to the coast with his wife and children.
Fishing Culture in Patagonia
While Gino has built his business on providing customers with ideas on what fish to eat in Patagonia, there are a number of activities that fishermen can do if they want to catch their own fish. Most people come to this part of the world for outdoor activities and for this reason, hiking, fly fishing, and camping are just some of the favorite things to do in Patagonia.
Villa la Angostura attracts many of these people due to the plethora of world-famous lakes and rivers and the high-quality and abundance of fish. The waters are teeming with trout and salmon which make a delicious meal and give visitors a taste of Patagonia. Spinning is a great option if they are looking to catch Chinook salmon. At the end of the day, what better way is there to explore the beauty of Patagonia than in the peace and quiet of nature with only the sounds of the river rushing by?
